Kovalchuk not headed back to KHL -- yet

New Jersey Devils left wing Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) is going to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and there is word that the Russian KHL league has a team that is already trying to woo him back to his homeland. The team in lovely St. Petersburg apparently wants Kovalchuk on its roster and is willing to shell out some big bucks to bring him there for a season, according to the New York Post.
Kovalchuk is saying that he hasn't agreed to any KHL deal yet but apparently wants to wait till July 1 to see what kind of offers come from NHL teams. A source tells the Post that the KHL team would have to be ready to spend a ton of cash in order to have him return to Russia.
The 27-year-old is supposedly interested in returning to the Devils roster. He can expect to be making more than $9 million annually wherever he ends up. That's a lot of rubles.

Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils making run at Leafs’ Kaberle Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils

While the Devils’ search for their next coach continues with Chicago assistant and Jersey native Mike Haviland believed to be the latest candidate interviewing for the job, sources say general manager Lou Lamoriello may be among the strongest bidders for Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle .

Kaberle , whom general manager Lou Lamoriello could be targeting, has been a regular trade subject in Toronto at the usual deal junctures, but Leafs GM Brian Burke recently circulated an e-mail to other general managers outlining the upcoming window in Kaberle’s no-trade clause.

Kaberle, 32 , is to make $4.25 million next season, the last on his deal before he becomes unrestricted in 2011. The Devils will be making a decision on Paul Martin , who becomes unrestricted July 1 after earning $4.5 million last year. One other possibility is Dan Hamhuis , who also becomes unrestricted on July 1.

Many believe the Leafs are willing to trade Kaberle during a window which begins at the draft, two weeks from tomorrow, through July. It’s believed Toronto wants a young regular and a draft pick.

The Devils do not have a first-round pick at this year’s draft, having dealt it to Atlanta in the Ilya Kovalchuk trade in February. Because of that deal’s swap of second-round picks, their first selection will be the 38th overall pick. The lack of a first-round selection could limit the chances of making such a deal.

On the coaching front, Haviland’s stock rose with the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup triumph Wednesday. Haviland has served as a minor league head coach, and was a major figure in New Jersey amateur coaching ranks. He was a 1990 Devils draftee in the old supplemental draft, but an injury ended the right wing’s pro bid.

One darkhorse would be fellow Blackhawk assistant John Torchetti, though the former Kings and Panthers coach is believed to be coveted by Atlanta, where he would rejoin Rick Dudley.

John MacLean, who coached Lowell to a playoff berth last season, remains the leading candidate for the Devils’ job, along with former Canadiens and Penguins coachMichel Therrien.

The Devils yesterday made official the return of their top farm team to Albany, where it won the AHL Calder Cup in 1995, only to leave for four years in Lowell following a string of miserable seasons and complaints from team ownership.

Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils hire John MacLean as coach Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils

The fourth time apparently was the charm for John MacLean.

A perennial candidate to lead the team he played for and coached as an assistant, MacLean was named the head coach of the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, replacing the retired Jacques Lemaire.

MacLean was considered for the head coaching position with the Devils on three other occasions, but lost out to, in order, Claude Julien (2006), Brent Sutter (2007) and Lemaire (2009).

“It’s a little bit surreal, almost like draft day all over again, being a rookie head coach,” MacLean said after being introduced by the team. “I couldn’t think of a better place to have my first head coaching job.”

MacLean spent last season coaching the Devils’ American Hockey League affiliate in Lowell, Mass., and led the team to its only playoff appearance in four seasons. That followed seven years as a Devils assistant.

That head coaching experience added the final piece of the puzzle that made MacLean a lock for the job, Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said Thursday.

Assistants don’t fully understand the responsibilities of being a head coach “until you are the one who makes that final decision, not the recommendation,” Lamoriello said. “John went there to Lowell this year and found out what that was all about, and that in my opinion was all that he needed.”

One of MacLean’s immediate challenges will be to reverse the Devils’ recent postseason history. Since winning their third Stanley Cup in a nine-year span in 2003, the Devils have not made it past the second round in the playoffs. Last season, they lost to Philadelphia in five games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Lemaire retired a few days after the series.

New Jersey had won its second straight Atlantic Division title with its 12th 100-point season in 15 years, but scored just nine goals in the five postseason games and allowed the Flyers to convert on 8 of 29 power-play chances.

The Devils have relied on hard work over flashiness for their greatest successes over the years, and have thrived with strong goaltending and a smothering, disciplined defense. MacLean said he would try to reinforce those principles.

“In this organization, even when we weren’t very good, we always worked hard,” he said. “If we can establish that night in and night out, with the talent level we have here, we’ll be a successful team.”

MacLean played for 19 years, 14 with the Devils. He is New Jersey’s leading goal-scorer with 347, and second in career points with 701. He also played for San Jose, the Rangers and Dallas.

While an assistant, MacLean ran most of the team’s practices in the second half of the 2005-06 season after Larry Robinson resigned abruptly in December, and did the same in 2007 when Julien was fired and replaced by Lamoriello with three games left in the regular season.

Robinson, who has since returned to the Devils bench as an assistant, will be retained to assist MacLean along with another assistant to be named, Lamoriello said. He also said Jamie Langenbrunner(notes) will remain as team captain.

Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils sign D Tallinder, Volchenkov, Hedberg... Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils

Hours after losing Paul Martin to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the New Jersey Devils quickly replaced him by signing veteran defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Anton Volchenkov.

New Jersey also added a new backup goalie, signing veteran Johan Hedberg to play behind Martin Brodeur.

Don Meehan, Tallinder’s agent, confirmed on Thursday that the Swede had agreed to a $13.5 million contract on the first day of the NHL’s free agent signing period.

Devils president Lou Lamoriello confirmed the signings of Volchenkov and Hedberg.

Volchenkov spent the past seven seasons with the Ottawa Senators. He agreed to a six-year deal for $25.5 million.

Hedberg, who played with Atlanta last season, got a one-year, $1.5 million deal.

All three moves came after Martin signed a five-year, $25 million contract with Atlantic Division-rival Pittsburgh. Martin had earned $4.5 million in the final injury-plagued season of his contract with New Jersey.

The 31-year-old Tallinder had four goals and 16 assists in 82 games last season with Buffalo. The stay-at-home defenseman has 20 career goals and 88 assists in seven seasons with the Sabres.

Volchenkov, 28, is a tough defensive-minded defenseman, who has 16 goals and 78 assists in his NHL career.

Hedberg went 21-16-6 with a 2.62 goals-against average. He will replace Yann Danis.

Devilsi vuku prave poteze, cini mi se.. Znacajno su ojacali odbranu ovim potezima..
Volchenkov - jedan od najdrazih igraca, statisticki vec godinama igrac sa najvise izblokiranih suteva.. Veoma snalazljiv, veoma pametan, ruska skola..

Osim dve titule prvaka sveta, nije prošao prvo kolo u NHL plej ofu.

Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Kovalchuk re-signs with Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils

The Devils snatched quite a soul Monday in the person of left wing Ilya Kovalchuk.

After a twist-filled script that lasted the better part of three weeks, Kovalchuk wrapped up hockey's version of a long-running summer blockbuster Monday by surprisingly re-signing with New Jersey, a move that startled the hockey world who had expected Kovy to sign with Los Angeles.

But Kovalchuk spurned the advances of Hollywood, in the form of the Kings, who had made several aggressive offers and even hosted the Russian winger in a college recruiting-style visit last week. In fact, several sources had reported that the Kings were very close to signing Kovalchuk -- agreeing on term and length of contract, but still needing to hammer out the nuances of a no-movement clause and the like.
Throughout, New Jersey President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello never backed out of the courtship process. His patience paid off with Monday's surprising announcement, which came just minutes after Kovalchuk's agent, Jay Grossman, used his Twitter feed to say his client would announce his destination later Monday.

"Ilya is excited to be continuing his career with New Jersey and knows first-hand the team's dedication and commitment to winning," Grossman said after the Devils announced the deal just before noon.

The Devils are excited to see what he can do in a full season with a team that feels it still has a legitimate chance at a title this coming season.

"We all know that, even looking at him on another team, that he's an exceptional talent," new Devils coach John MacLean told the Newark Star-Ledger. "As I've stated before, I have not heard from anybody throughout the organization a bad word about him. He's a tremendous teammate and addition. He'll have no issues playing for the team.
He signed here for a reason -- to try to win a championship. This organization has a good history of that, so you know he wants to be part of the team. That's what I'm excited about."

That tradition of winning likely helped New Jersey outlast the Kings, who were believed to be the frontrunner after making several offers and hosting the Russian star last week's recruiting visit.

"(Kovalchuk) had two very good choices. (New Jersey) offered more money. Simple as that," Tim Leiweke, the Kings' governor and chief executive of their parent company, AEG, said in an e-mail to the Los Angeles Times.

"We threw everything at him we had while leaving the cap space necessary to sign our kids. He is a great player and I am disappointed he didn't come to L.A. It was not for lack of effort or cash."

Kovalchuk was the biggest unrestricted free agent on the market this summer, and was heavily courted by several teams before the Kings and the Devils took center stage. Kovalchuk finished the 2009-10 season with the Devils after arriving in a blockbuster deal just prior to the Winter Olympics.
Kovalchuk, who has scored 40 or more goals in each of the past six seasons, was obtained in a bold move by Lamoriello, who believed his team had a solid shot at the Stanley Cup after a season that ended with the club winning another Atlantic Division title and finishing No. 2 in the Eastern Conference.

Kovalchuk had 27 points in 27 games with the Devils after his arrival to give him 41 goals and 85 points for the season. New Jersey sent rookie forward Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier and a 2010 first-round draft pick to the Atlanta Thrashers for Kovalchuk.
But the Devils struggled to get started in the postseason and were bounced in the first round by the Philadelphia Flyers, who marched all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Chicago. Kovalchuk had 6 points in that five-game ouster.

No details of the contract were announced, but if Kovalchuk makes more than $3.5 million annually -- which seems very likely considering he made $7.5 last season -- New Jersey will have to make additional moves to get under the $59.4 million salary cap before the start of the season. Teams can go as high as 10 percent over the cap until the start of the regular season.

Kovalchuk was the first selection of the 2001 Entry Draft by Atlanta and had played his entire career with the Thrashers before the trade.

In 594 games with the Thrashers from 2002-10, Kovalchuk scored 328 goals and had 287 assists (615 points). More than a third of his goals came on the power play (115). But in Atlanta he played in only four playoff games and lost all of them to the New York Rangers in 2007, managing only 1 goal and 1 assist.

Kovalchuk shared the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2004 (41 goals) with Rick Nash and Jarome Iginla. He set a Thrashers franchise record with 52 goals in 2005-06 and matched it in 2007-08.
