John Barbero: 1945-2010

John Barbero, the public address announcer whose melodious voice and uncanny sense of timing made him an integral part of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey for four decades, passed away Monday evening. He was 65.


Barbero had gallantly battled a brain tumor since February, 2009, and spent his final days resting comfortably in a Washington County hospice surrounded by his family, according to his son, Brady.


Barbero called his first Penguins game in 1972-73 and worked 36 seasons for the team. He was part of three Stanley Cup championship seasons and had the distinction of announcing every home goal of Mario Lemieux's Hall of Fame career.


"On behalf of the entire Penguins organization, I want to express our deepest sympathy to John's family," said Lemieux, now the team's owner. "John was one of a kind, a true professional, and he always will be remembered as a member of the Penguins family. He will be missed."


Barbero was an educator by trade and was the longtime principal at Waynesburg High School. He only missed a handful of games during his Penguins’ career, mostly because of school trips; he was committed to the Penguins and committed to his students.


He easily made friends with media members, visiting team officials and local and national broadcasters, and probably never realized his enormous impact on Penguins hockey and the game itself.


"John had the very best traits of a man in his position," said Mike Emrick, the national voice of the NHL on NBC and Versus. "He had a clear, authoritative voice, he was accurate, and most importantly he was a pleasant, kind soul I looked forward to seeing.


"The job meant a lot to John, and his personality and professionalism meant a lot to those of us who depended on him."


Barbero's final game was Game 6 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final at Mellon Arena, a pivotal Penguins' victory over Detroit en route to their third Cup. He will be honored as a member of the Penguins All-Time Team in a new display at CONSOL Energy Center.


He is survived by two sons, Brady and Brett, and a daughter, Melissa Christian. He had three grandchildren - Quinn John Barbero and Stella and Roxi Christian.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

Penguins sign forward Aaron Asham



The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Arron Asham to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract is worth $700,000 and is for the 2010-11 season.

Asham (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) played with the Philadelphia Flyers the past two seasons. He posted 24 points (10G-14A) and 126 penalty minutes in 72 games in 2009-10. Asham chipped in a career-high four goals and seven points in 23 contests in the playoffs to help Philadelphia win the Eastern Conference title and earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1997.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Pittsburgh Penguins won’t re-sign forward Bill Guerin(notes), preferring instead to give several young forwards a chance to play on one of their top lines.

The 39-year-old Guerin scored 21 goals last season and had four more during the playoffs while often playing on Sidney Crosby’s(notes) line. He has 429 goals and 427 assists in 1,263 career games with eight teams, starting with New Jersey in the 1991-92 season.

Guerin was dealt to Pittsburgh during a trading deadline deal on March 2, 2009. He had 26 goals in 95 regular season games and 11 goals in 35 playoff games, helping Pittsburgh win the Stanley Cup in 2009.

The Penguins plan to give a longer look during training camp to younger forwards Eric Tangradi, Dustin Jeffrey and Mark Letestu.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have found a new veteran forward to play with Sidney Crosby(notes). On Friday, the Penguins announced that forward Mike Comrie(notes) signed a one-year, $500,000 to play in Pittsburgh.


As a veteran free agent forward, Comrie had to weigh more lucrative offers from non-contenders against the appeal of playing for the Stanley Cup.

He chose the contender.

“I'm excited. It was definitely a hockey decision,” Comrie told the Globe and Mail. “I wanted to go to a great team and be a part of an organization like Pittsburgh and be able to compete for a Stanley Cup.”

It's a strong fit for Comrie who was limited to just 43 games last season while battling mononucleosis. In 32 games, Comrie had 13 goals and eight assists but at 29 years old is still capable of returning to the 20-goal player he was with the Islanders, Oilers and Coyotes earlier in his career.

Especially if he gets considerable time on the wing with Crosby.

According to the Globe and Mail, Comrie also drew interest from the Kings, Red Wings and Ducks before striking the deal with Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

“I think it has to be the right situation, with the right opportunity,” he said. “I think every guy feels that way.”

Jordan Staal to miss the start of the season



The Penguins suffered an early loss before even lacing up their skates for their 2010 training camp. Center Jordan Staal, who has missed only one regular-season game in his four-year career, will not be available when Pittsburgh opens the season Oct. 7 against Philadelphia.

Staal had a procedure this week to cure an infection in his foot and the recovery period is expected to be 5-6 weeks.

Staal originally suffered a lacerated tendon in his foot in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Montreal. The tendon was repaired with offseason surgery, but developed a post-op infection.

Losing Staal is a huge loss to the Penguins, and the team will have to make some early adjustments to fill the void.

“We were hoping (he’d be ready) for the start of the season; it looks like now that won’t be the case,” Bylsma said. “It’s a major adjustment. But with the depth that we’ve added this summer, players like Mike Comrie, a guy that can play both wing and center, we have good options to fill some of what Jordan would bring.”
